๐Ÿ—“ Last updated October 19, 2026 ๐Ÿ“ PetFoodRankings score: 90/100 โ€” Exceptional โœ๏ธ Reviewed by KEFA YING

The most animal-dense red-meat kibble on the shelf and the only one in this ranking with no poultry anywhere near the top of the list. It is also the most expensive dry dog food we score - you are paying for the ingredient panel, and you should know that going in.

Score breakdown

The overall score of 90/100 is a weighted sum of the six dimensions below. Each dimension shows what we found in this specific formula.

100 Protein quality & source
Weight 30% ยท Algorithm-computed score
100/100

Algorithm: first ingredient โ€œBeefโ€ is named whole meat; 5 named animal ingredients in the top five; protein 43.2% on a dry-matter basis (target for this stage: 26%).

80 Ingredient transparency
Weight 20% ยท Algorithm-computed score
80/100

Algorithm: first ingredient is a named animal source; among the top five, 0 by-product/unnamed and 0 plant-protein concentrate items.

84 Nutritional standards
Weight 18% ยท Editorially assessed score
84/100

AAFCO statement: Formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages except for growth of large-size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult).. Formulated-to-meet profiles are acceptable but weaker evidence than feeding trials, which caps the score here.

95 Recall history & safety
Weight 14% ยท Editorially assessed score
95/100

Zero FDA or CFIA recalls for Orijen across more than 40 years of production in the US and Canada. The only event on record is a 2018 voluntary withdrawal of select bags from Champion's new Kentucky kitchen for elevated moisture - a quality issue, never a contamination event. The brand was named in FDA's 2019 DCM investigation; that investigation closed without establishing a causal link, and the heavy-metals class actions were resolved in Champion's favour.

88 Value for money
Weight 10% ยท Algorithm-computed score
88/100

Algorithm: about $3.16 per 1,000 kcal ($$$ tier), normalized against same-species peers, wet and dry together (cheapest = 100, most expensive โ‰ˆ 15).

91 Owner & pal feedback
Weight 8% ยท Editorially assessed score
91/100

Owner ratings are consistently high across major retailers, with few recurring palatability complaints.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Five named red meats in the first five slots - beef, wild boar, lamb, pork and beef liver - with no poultry of any kind
  • 38% protein on a 12% moisture label, about 43% on a dry-matter basis, from roughly 85% animal ingredients
  • Genuinely useful for the dog that has failed chicken: no poultry protein, no poultry fat, no eggs in the top of the list
  • 3,860 kcal/kg is the densest recipe here, so the cup size stays small despite the premium price

What we don't

  • About $3.16 per 1,000 kcal - the most expensive dry dog food in this ranking
  • The all-life-stages statement explicitly excludes large-breed puppy growth, so giant-breed puppies need a different bag
  • Four red meats in one recipe makes it the wrong choice for an elimination trial, which is the opposite of what the price suggests
  • Rich enough that owners who switch in under two weeks report loose stools more often than on any other food here

Ingredients & nutrition analysis

The first five ingredients tell most of the story:

BeefWild BoarLambPorkBeef Liver

Regional Red is the recipe Orijen owners usually move to after Original, and the two are closer than the marketing suggests: identical protein and fat guarantees, near-identical calorie density. The real difference is species. Original leads with chicken and turkey; Regional Red leads with beef, wild boar, lamb and pork and carries no poultry at all. That makes it the only Orijen dry recipe that works for a dog with a confirmed poultry sensitivity.

The trade-off nobody advertises: four red meats is a wide allergen surface. If you are trying to work out what your dog reacts to, this is one of the worst bags you could buy, because a positive result tells you almost nothing. Buy it after the elimination trial, not during it.

One label detail worth reading carefully. The AAFCO statement covers all life stages but carves out growth of large-size dogs, which is the opposite of Original's statement that explicitly includes it. That is a calcium-and-phosphorus decision, not a quality judgement - but if you have a Great Dane puppy, this is not the bag.

Per calorie it costs roughly three times what the Canidae in this ranking costs, and the ingredient panel is the entire justification. Whether that is worth it depends on whether you value named whole meats over a chicken-meal-led recipe - there is no nutritional outcome we can verify that settles it.
